EDITORIAL — "A student trustee is someone who can understand the needs of everyone in the student body. They should be able to relay opinions from students to the board, acting as a bridge of communication." Nur Iscan, a grade-11 student at WCI, is running for student trustee in the 2023-2024 year. Read on to find out about what makes Nur a superb candidate.
Nur describes herself as a driven person who always strives for change. An active member of the Senior Orchestra and the Guitar Ensemble at WCI, music holds massive importance for Nur. Additionally, she is also very passionate about STEM, specifically providing representation for women in the field. This year, Nur's choice to run for Student Trustee was driven by her passion for making everyone feel part of the school community.
Let's look at the position itself (because perhaps you've been ignoring all those "Apply for Student Trustee" emails and are clueless about what this position actually is…); Nur describes a Student Trustee as someone who can well represent the student body at WRDSB. It should be someone who can listen and speak for the various voices of schools. This links to being able to take the initiative in many circumstances, which Nur points out as an essential requirement. During the interview, Nur also expresses her safety concern. Especially with many school-related events opening up, Nur plans on prioritizing these matters to contribute to the well-being of students.
So… why vote for Nur? Nur's experience in various clubs has allowed her to develop many perspectives. She has met many people, giving her a well-rounded idea of representation. Nur's immense leadership capabilities, developed with clubs (EcoClub, French Club, The Viking View), events, and councils (Kitchener Youth Action Council) that she is part of, will also be able to positively shape her actions as a Student Trustee.
Additionally, Nur's campaign is full of sincere promises for WRDSB. They are as follows:
Changes in the destreamed courses;
Redirecting WRDSB's environmental footprint into a more sustainable direction; and
Advocacy for the Sustainability Working Group, French Immersion Review, and Equity & Inclusion Advisory Group.
A vote for Nur Iscan is a vote for a more diverse and sustainable school board. Want to show your support? Follow Nur @nurforstudenttrustee and get your votes in by February 24th, Vikes!
