Updated: Mar 29, 2023

SCHOOL NEWS — The Co-Mayor position is one of WCI’s most coveted positions of leadership, academic excellence, athleticism, and social direction. Below, we have four incredible nominees for the 2023-24 Year, and only two will achieve the position. Who will you vote for? View the 2023-24 nominees below.

ERNIE BAE

Ernie Bae (@bae4comayor) proposes enthusiastic visions for the 2023-24 WCI Co-Mayor elections, a position of exhilarating events and unity. Get to know the first of four outstanding Co-Mayor nominees below.

Ernie Bae brings ideas of community, creativity, and unparalleled school spirit to the Co-Mayor position. Some of Ernie’s top achievements are being part of Junior and Senior Boys Rugby and championing WCSSA and being a CWOSSA finalist in Junior Rugby. Additionally, Ernie is a Hack the North participant, as well as an Honour Roll student. On the note of athletics, Ernie is involved in various high-performing sports teams and clubs - that is Junior and Senior Boys Rugby, Intermediate and Senior Orchestra, and Junior Volleyball.

WCI has had a lot of exceptional events this past year - a few of Ernie’s favourites include Relay4Life, with his positioning as a Committee Director, being a focal point of March Madness as an Organizer, and WCI’s lively Semi-Formal.

The Co-Mayor position requires extensive planning - Ernie is just getting started on his prospects. In a statement, Ernie details, “I want WCI to be a school where students across the board want to be. Over my time here at WCI, I've been lucky to meet hundreds of amazing, hardworking, and talented students. However, no matter how many great students and staff there are, there always seems to be a gap when it comes to school spirit. As Co-Mayor, my main focus is to create stronger bonds between students and an overall more connected and safe school environment, since we can only have a spirited school when students feel safe, comfortable and connected with their peers. To accomplish this? I want to continue previous events and add new ones where students can get together as a community.

To begin, I want to bring back the school-wide BBQ, have a greater emphasis on mental health (in the form of an assembly/fundraiser), bring more attention to Student Athletes (transition the athletics Instagram page to something similar to House of Highlights/Dunk), get Leadership to sponsor clubs which will allow them to have bigger events and access to more resources, a school merch design contest, weekly school info newsletter emails, and much more. I believe all of these events and alterations will help students better connect with one another, leading to a more positive and comfortable environment for every Viking.

I know how great WCI is. I've seen it walking through the halls, at events, and in classrooms. I want us all to be able to come together in a safe, fun way so that every Viking at WCI can get the high school experience they deserve.”
