SCHOOL NEWS — DECA Provincial Qualifiers got intimate and exited at their post-regionals retreat to KW Escape on November 30th, 2022.
DECA Provincial Qualifiers, KW Escape (2022).
WCI students competing in DECA, an international business writing and pitching competition, took their regional exams in mid-November to qualify for the prestigious provincial competition hosted in Toronto this year. Orals competitors have studied strenuously to pass the 100-question business exam in 75 minutes, and Written competitors are working strenuously on 20-page business reports, working with large-scale businesses, and presentations.
DECA-enthusiasts across Canada will compete at the Toronto Sheraton Hotel in February to represent WCI and hone their public speaking and presentation skill sets. To rejoice on WCI DECA's achievements, a retreat to KW Escape was scheduled to congratulate DECA competitors, new and old, to engage and appreciate their hard work.
Students arrived at KW Escape and were sanctioned into groups to begin their exciting adventures. Before entering the rooms, students describe the event as “exhilarating, and gives you butterflies in your stomach.”
One team described KW Escape’s “Twister” room as “camping… gone wrong.” With an escape success rate of 42%, the trope of the room explained eerily that a tornado would destroy all of Kitchener, and escapees had to unlock a car to avoid the death-defying disaster. The “Twister” Team experienced unlocking cabinets and stovetops in a camping RV, decoding secretive messages through Smore packets, and climbing up a tree to a secret hatchet—all to unlock the car and escape the tornado.
Emily Cheng, a DECA Written Workshop Executive, describes the event as “one of the best experiences of high school” and advocates students at WCI to engage in DECA in the future, explaining: “DECA taught me a lot about business, and the experience I gained from competing—in contacting and liaising with business professionals, conducting research and analyzing it, writing reports, and making presentations—has been invaluable. However, I value DECA most because it helped me build confidence in my abilities as a student and a leader.”

On all accounts, DECA Students had a wonderful time engaging in post-regionals celebrations before the anticipated venture to Toronto in February. For WCI students, make sure to keep posted on WCI Clubs to engage and make memorable connections in high school.
